The shaft tower

The tower with the shaft lift down into the mine was the core of the mine, and a beautiful landmark visible from a long distance. The elevator's history contains both mining success and tragedy. A trip to the tower is truly a fascinating experience!

The first shaft tower on Litlabø was built of wood and was built in 1910. It was quickly too small, and today's tower is cast in concrete and from 1928.

The building mass around the tower - the course crusher house with the round tipper and the empty wagon stable - was demolished in the 1970's. Today, the tower is a great memorial to the mining operations at Litlabø.

Venelaget for Gruo has carried out a major restoration work on the tower. It was laid new floor on each of the levels, and new stairs built. Inside the tower there are four floors or levels. It is a great view from the upper level. At the entrance there are two lift baskets where workers, materials and masses once were transported.
